Dr. Who in de bioscoop?

Een van mijn grootste ontdekkingen van het afgelopen jaar was de bijzondere wereld van Dr. Who.
Deze britse sciencefictionserie lijkt soms gemaakt met mijn fantasie in het achterhoofd: excentrieke tijdreiziger, monsters in alle soorten en maten, bizarre plots die het hele tijd-ruimte continuüm omvatten en engelse humor. De oude series hadden een erg beperkt budget en dat is te zien aan de kartonnen achtergronden en plastic wezens, maar het sterke verhaal maakt dat je daar nauwelijks op let. Het enige jammere vind ik dat de serie nogal aan de Aarde gebonden blijft. Het bezoeken van andere planeten is voor mij wel een kernkwaliteit van Science Fiction series (Daarom zou ik volgens mijn vriend Hans de serie Farscape geweldig vinden).
Anyway, ik heb ook de meeste afleveringen gezien van de nieuwe serie Dr. Who. Hier was wel geld genoeg voor goede special effects en sommige beelden doen niet onder voor de meest spectaculaire bioscoopfilm. De nieuwe afleveringen hebben vaak een emotionele impact die de oude afleveringen misten. De monsters en tegenstanders zijn goed bedacht (maar ook oude klassiekers als de Daleks en Cybermen komen terug), maar ze vallen soms weg tegen de relatie tussen de Doctor en Rose. Aan het eind van het laatste seizoen leken de twee voor altijd gescheiden...
Nu komt het gerucht dat er gewerkt wordt aan een bioscoopfilm!
Voor deze film zou actrice Billie Piper zich weer bij de cast willen voegen (ondanks het einde van seizoen 2).
Ik heb er geen bezwaar tegen en hoop dat een film de speciale britse eigenaardigheid behoudt. Hoe ze een plot kunnen verzinnen dat het op kan nemen tegen de 'Daleks vs Cybermen' confrontatie weet ik niet, maar ik ben benieuwd.

Even iets anders: volgend jaar weer een animatiefilm over pinguins. Lijkt me leuk.

This british science fiction series sometimes seems conceived with my kind of fantasy in mind: excentric timetraveller, monsters of all kinds, bizarre plots that spread the whole of the space-time continuum and real brittish humor. The old series had a low budget and that's clear to see from the cardboard backgrounds and the plastic creatures, but the strong stories make it an issue of almost nu importance. The only sad thing for mis the often earth-bound quality of the sereis. Visiting other planets is to me one of the core qualities of science fiction (according to my friend Hans I would like the series Farscape very much).
Anyway, i also saw most episodes about the new Dr. Who. This production had enough money for good special effects and some images would not be amiss in the most spectacular hollywoodmovie. The new episodes often have an emotional impact missing in the older ones. The monsters and adversaries are nicely conceived (but old classics like the Daleks and Cybermen do also return), but they fade into the background compared to the relation between the Doctor and Rose. At the end of the last season the two seemed to be parted forever...
Now there's a rumor that people are working on a movie!
For this movie actress Billie Piper is asked to join the cast again.
I don't object to it and hope a movie would retain the special brittisch quirkyness. How the writers will be able to come up with a plot that rivals the 'Daleks vs Cybermen'-episode is a mistery for me, but I'm curious...

Something totally different: next year another animated movie about penguins. Seems like fun...]
