Hoewel iedereen druk bezig is zich voor te bereiden op de gezellige, maar drukke feestdagen (geen zorgen, ik ga vanavond ook naar de kerk) hier een paar nieuwsfeitjes en links die voor afleiding kunnen zorgen. Misschien zelfs iets te veel afleiding.Zoals jullie weten ben ik groot liefhebber van films, en dan vooral de meer fantastische films, of het nou science fiction, fantasy of geschiedenis is. En het goede nieuws is dat zulke films gemaakt blijven worden. Zo vond ik een tijdje geleden het bericht dat er een nieuwe verzie van Tarzan in de maak is. Het verhaal van Tarzan is een van de bekendste moderne verhalen, oorspronkelijk verzonnen door Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912 en talloze malen doorverteld in vervolgverhalen, radio-uitzendingen, stripboeken, films en televisieseries. En natuurlijk schaamteloos gekopieerd: de superheld 'Kazar' uit de Marvel-stripverhalen is gebaseerd op Tarzan (maar hij heeft een tamme sabeltandtijger, dus daarover hoor je mij niet klagen). Dit verhaal heeft kennelijk een mythische komponent, waardoor het tot onze verbeelding spreekt. Een kind overleeft de dood van zijn ouders, omdat het door apen wordt opgevoed. Opgegroeid tot een man komt hij terug in de beschaving, maar teleurgesteld door de westerse decadentie laat hij zijn landgoed achter zich en keert terug naar de jungle. Ik denk dat het 'terug naar de natuur'-thema het element is dat ons zo aanspreekt. Tolkien zei al dat het een van de diepe menselijke verlangens is om met dieren te kunnen praten (daarom dat het vaak een thema is in sprookjesverhalen). En ik geloof dat de kloof tussen mens en natuur een duidelijk gevolg is van de zondeval, toen de aardbodem werd vervloekt en de mens voortaan moest strijden tegen 'doorns en distels'. Diep van binnen willen we allemaal terug naar het bestaan in het paradijs. Ik hoop dat deze thema's in een nieuwe filmversie door zullen klinken. Ik heb eigenlijk alleen maar komische variaties gezien: de Disney-film en George of the Jungle. De nieuwe versie wordt gemaakt door Guillermo del Toro, de regisseur van Hellboy en Pan's Labyrinth. Als je iets kunt zeggen over deze regisseur is het dat hij een ongebreidelde verbeelding heeft en een liefde voor de verhalen van begin twintigste eeuw. En hij heeft een realistische, donkere verfilming in zijn gedachten. Ik ben benieuwd.
Wat teleurstellend is het laatste bericht over de nieuwe film van James Cameron, Avatar. Deze is uitgesteld tot 2009! AAAH!!! Nog langer wachten! Dit wordt namelijk de eerste bioscoopfilm van James Cameron sinds Titanic, en zijn eerste SF-film sinds Terminator 2. Op de een of andere manier bereikt Cameron altijd een combinatie van geweldige special effects, zinderende spanning en een sterk verhaal. Vooral The Abyss is een geweldige film, een van mijn favoriete films aller tijden. En Avatar belooft ook al veel goeds. Ik heb jaren geleden al eens een samenvatting van het script gelezen en dat was echt fantastisch. Het is een film over een andere planeet, die totaal verschilt van de Aarde (he, he, eindelijk weer eens een andere wereld op het bioscoopscherm). Hij wordt gefilmd en getoond in 3-D. En hij maakt gebruik van de modernste digitale technieken, om een volkomen foto-realistisch beeld te bewerkstelligen. Dat wordt gaaf...
Maar er zijn ook al aardige films waar we niet zo lang op hoeven te wachten. Er komt bijvoorbeeld een hele rits animatiefilms aan. Ik ga heus niet aan allemaal aandacht besteden, maar de trailer voor Bee Movie verdient wel jullie aandacht. Hij is vrij onverwacht en maakt me eigenlijk wel nieuwsgierig naar de film. Net als de trailer voor de film Comedian (Ook van Jerry Seinfeld trouwens) neemt deze trailer het proces van filmmaken op de hak.
Normaal ben ik niet zo van zielige films over schrijvers. Veel te realistisch allemaal. Maar als het gaat om een schrijver met fantasie (vooral eentje waar Lewis als kind van hield, en wiens creatie Peter Rabbit zijn gevoel van verlangen aanwakkerde) en die fantasie wordt ook nog eens in beeld gebracht, maak ik graag een uitzondering. Dit geldt voor Miss Potter, een film over Beatrix Potter. Ik was erg te spreken over Finding Neverland, een van mijn favorieten van vorig jaar. Deze zou wel eens net zo mooi kunnen worden.
En dan tenslotte een van de grote zomerfilms van volgend jaar: Transformers. Ik ken de tekenfilmserie wel van vroeger (hoewel ik meer was van GI Joe) en had er een paar als speelgoed. Toch was ik niet zo enorm enthousiast over deze film. Ik bedoel: het gaat over voertuigen die in robots veranderen, dat gaat vast niet overtuigend worden. Maar langzaam begin ik van mening te veranderen. Ten eerste omdat Steven Spielberg producer is van deze film, en ik hoef niet meer te zeggen dat ik nogal fan van hem ben. En vervolgens door deze trailer, die laat zien dat de filmmakers geen ironische of humoristische benadering kiezen, maar het onderwerp serieus behandelen (voor zover dat mogelijk is). Het lijkt zelfs behoorlijk spannend! Daar moet ik heen!
[Even though everybody is busy preparing for the nice, but busy holidays that are coming (don't worry, I'll go to church too this evening), I've found some nice news items that offer some distraction. Maybe even too much distraction.
As you know, I love movies, and especially the more fantastical ones, be they science fiction, fantasy or history. And the good news is: these movies are still being made. For example I found the notice that a new version of Tarzan is being produces. The story of Tarzan is one of most popular moderns stories, originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912 and endlessy retold in sequels, radio transmissions, comicbooks, movies and televisionseries. And of course shamelessly copied: The Marvel hero 'Kazar' is obviously based on Tarzan (but he has a tame sabertoothcat, so I won't complain). This story seems to have a mythical component and that's why it appeals to our imagination. A young child survives the dead of his parents and is raised by great apes. As a grown man he returns to civilisation, but after being disappointed in the western decadence, he leaves all that behind to go back to the jungle. I think the 'back to nature' theme is the element that fascinates us. Tolkien already said that one of the abiding human desires is to communicate with animals. That's why it's a common theme in fairy tales. And I believe that the gap between man and nature is a clear consequence of the fall, when the earth ws cursed and man had to fight with 'thorns and thistles' from that moment on. Deep inside we all long for that paradisical existence. I do hope these themes will echo in a new movie version. I must admit that until now I've only seen comical variations: the Disney-animation and George of the Jungle. This new version will be created by Guillermo del Toro, the director of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. If there's a thing that's true of this director it is that he has an almost unlimited imagination and loves stories from the beginning of the last century. He has plans for a realistic, edgy adaptation. I'm excited already.
A bit of a disappointment is the last news about the new movie by James Cameron, Avatar. It's pushed back to 2009! AARGH!!! The wait gets even longer! For this will be the first movie by James Cameron after Titanic, and his first SF-movie since Terminator 2. One way or the other Cameron always manages a combination of cutting edge special effects, terrific tension and a strong story. I especially like The Abyss, of of my all time favorites. And Avatar sure is promising. Years back I read a script treatment and it was mouth wateringly good. This is a movie about an alien planet, totally different from Earth (At last! A believeable alien world on the movie screen). It will be filmed and shown in 3-D. And it will use the newest digital techniques, creating a foto-realistic environment. Coooool....
But there are also some nice movies closer to the horizon. Like a whole slew of computer animated movies. I won't give much attention to all of them, but I'd like to point you to the trailer for Bee Movie. This one is rather unexpected and makes me curious to see the movie. Just like the trailer for the movie Comedian (made by Jerry Seinfeld too) this trailer parodies the process of filmmaking.
Usually I'm not one for sad movies about tormented authors. Much to realistic all of them. But when it concerns a writer with a vivid imagination (one that Lewis loved as a child and whose creation Peter Rabbit made him feel a desire for beauty) and that imagination is brought to life too, I'll gladly make an exception. This is true for Miss Potter, a movie about Beatrix Potter. I did love Finding Neverland, one of my favorites of last year. This one could turn out to be just as good.
Then finally one of the larger block busters of next year: Transformers. I watched the animation series as a kid (though I watched GI Joe more often) and we had a couple of transformertoys. But I wasn't particularly looking forward to this movie. It's about cars changing into robots, hard to treat convincingly. But I'm changing my view. Firstly because Steven Spielberg acts as producer, and I need not repeat how much I am a fan of his. Then there's this trailer, that shows the filmmakers are not opting for a 'tongue in cheek' adaptation, but take their subject seriously (as far as that is possible). It's rather tense, actually. So I'll have to watch it!]
