Nu 2006 er weer bijna op zit, is het tijd om vooruit te kijken. Vooral naar de goede films die er aan zitten te komen. De volgende drie maanden zitten vol met interessante films. Het aftellen kan beginnen...4 januari draait The Illusionist, een film over een goochelaar rond de vorige eeuwwisseling (die van 1899 naar 1900), en een prins die maar wat graag wil weten hoe hij zijn act vormgeeft. Waarom ik deze film wil zien? Hij speelt zich af in het verleden, en is zelfs 'gekleurd' als een oude film. De acteurs zijn goed: Paul Giamatti (uit Lady in the Water) en Edward Norton (Fight Club). En het verhaal heeft iets magisch: is het goochelarij, of misschien...?
11 januari komt Apocalypto uit. Waarschijnlijk ga ik hier wel heen, maar doe ik bij de enge stukjes mijn ogen dicht. (Hopelijk zie ik ze wel aankomen.) De film gaat over een verdwenen beschaving (de Maya-indianen), die indrukwekkende tempels heeft achtergelaten, en ik ben benieuwd hoe die in beeld is gebracht. Hij wordt zelfs gesproken in een Maya-accent. Verder staat de regisseur garant voor spannende, intense films. Reden om de film niet te kijken is het geweld: volgen sommigen was het in deze film excessief. (tja, dat heb je met mensenoffers). Maar anderen vergelijken het wat geweld betreft met Braveheart en dat hou ik ook vol (met opzijkijken).
Op 18 januari een nieuwe film met Sylvester Stallone: Rocky Balboa. Ik heb niet zo veel met sportfilms, en met boksen al helemaal niet. Maar de trailer voor deze film is toch wel intrigerend. Bovendien heeft Stallone het tegenwoordig vaker over zijn christelijke overtuiging. En verder zijn dit soort verhalen van een uitgerangeerde bokser die het opneemt tegen een jongere kampioen en tegen de vooroordelen van het publiek meestal wel inspirerend.
Een luchthartiger film is Arthur and the Minimoys, die uitkomt op 1 februari. Deze kinderfilm gebruikt een mengeling van gewone acteurs en computeranimatie, en gaat over een miniscuul volkje, dat leeft in een achtertuin. Ik vind het altijd gaaf om te zien hoe vreemd en indrukwekkend alledaagse voorwerpen worden vanuit een niet-alledaags perspectief, zoals dat van een mier... De werkelijkheid met andere ogen zien, dat is waar het op deze blog om gaat.
Dan volgt op 8 februari The Prestige, nog een film over goochelaars, maar wel een waar ik erg naar uitkijk. De regisseur van Batman Begins, acteurs als Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman en Christian Bale, en een verhaal over rivaliteit en de zoektocht naar de meest indrukwekkende stunt. En ook hier de vraag: is het wel allemaal echt? De recensies voor deze film waren in elk geval erg goed!
Op 15 februari opnieuw een fantasyfilm van Disney: Bridge to Terebithia. Schijnt te zijn gebaseerd op een heel mooi kinderboek, maar volgens sommigen die de trailer hebben gezien, zou alle subtiliteit uit het boek zijn verdwenen in de film. Dat zou jammer zijn, want we hebben ook meer subtiele kinderfilms nodig. In elk geval zitten er wandelende bomen in (niet zo origineel), maar ook strijdvaardige elfjes die zich in de lucht in slagorde opstellen. En het gaat over de waarde van de verbeelding, en daar kunnen niet genoeg films over gemaakt worden, wat mij betreft.
Ook luchthartig: Night at the Museum, die vanaf 15 februari te zien zal zijn. In het museum voor natuurlijke historie komen de exposities 's nachts tot leven. De dinosaurusskeletten, de opgezette leeuwen, de levensgrote hunnen en de miniaturen van de romeinen en de cowboys. De nachtwacht (Ben Stiller) heeft het er maar druk mee... Hier moet ik wel heen, al was het alleen maar voor de dinosaurus (heb ik al gezegd dat ik van dinosaurussen houd? Dan bij deze!). Oh, en voor de boerende walvis...
Maar spectaculair wordt het pas echt op 22 februari, als Curse of the Golden Flower in de bioscoop komt. Ik heb hier al vaker over geschreven, maar deze film van de maker van Hero en House of Flying Daggers komt er in elk geval heel mooi uit te zien. Grootste scénes, prachtige kostuums en een verhaal over intrige aan het chinese hof.
Als schrijver kijk ik ook uit naar Stranger than Fiction (verschijnt 1 maart), waarin een accountant een stem in zijn hoofd hoort die zijn leven beschrijft. Al snel blijkt dat hij de hoofdpersoon is in het nieuwste boek van een bekende schrijver. Een schrijver die er om bekend staat dat ze haar hoofdpersonen aan het eind laat overlijden. Gelukkig worstelt ze met een writers block... Dit soort verhalen roepen vragen op over hoe we leven en hoe we de loop van ons leven bepalen. Bovendien wordt hij geregisseerd door de regisseur van Finding Neverland, een van mijn favorieten...
Een mooie science-fiction film is natuurlijk ook nooit weg. En The Fountain, die we vanaf 8 maart kunnen zien, lijkt me erg mooi. En ingewikkeld. Drie mannen in drie tijden (1500, 2006 en 2500) zoeken naar de bron van de eeuwige jeugd... Schijnt meer een romantisch drama te zijn dan een actiespectakel, maar de beelden zijn indrukwekkend. Er is bovendien geen computer aan te pas gekomen.
Op 8 maart zullen we moeten kiezen, want dat is ook de dag dat Pan's Labyrinth uitkomt. Een soort sprookje voor volwassenen, over de kracht van onschuld en de gruwelen die mensen bedrijven. Een bijzonder intrigerende film. Ook een waarbij ik waarschijnlijk bij sommige stukjes moet wegkijken, maar ik denk dat ik het mezelf niet kan vergeven als ik er niet heen ga. Films over de kracht van de verbeelding, het volwassen worden en metersgrote padden blijven me fascineren.
Tenslotte krijgen we onze dosis klassieke oudheid op 22 maart met de film The 300. Driehonderd spartanen tegen een half miljoen perzen. Gebaseerd op een stripverhaal, dus realisme zal ver te zoeken zijn, maar heldhaftig wordt het zeker. De achtergrond bestaat volledig uit computeranimatie. Nadat ik deze week Troy heb gekeken, ben ik hier helemaal klaar voor.
En dit is nog maar het begin van een mooi jaar, met superhelden zoals Spider-Man 3, The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (het voorstukje is cool) en de Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, piraten (Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End), robots (Transformers) tovenaars (Harry Potter -The Order of the Phoenix) en boemannen (Shrek 3). Ja, er komt genoeg om over te bloggen, daar maak ik me geen zorgen over.

From januari 4th on there's The Illusionist, a movie about a (guess it) illusionist (that's right) from the beginning of the twentieth century, and a prince who want's to know how he creates his act. Why I want to see this movie? It takes place in the past, and is even colored to look like a film of the past. The actors are good: Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water) and Edward Norton (Fight Club). And the story has a magical element: is it all only illusion, or maybe...?
Januari 11th marks the day Apocalypto will reach the Dutch cinema screens. I'll probably end up seeing this, but closing my eyes at the scary parts (if I can see when they're coming). It's a movie about a lost civilisation (the Maya), that left impressive temples behind, and I'm curious to see how it has been realised on screen. The movie is even spoken in oldfashioned Maya. And the director is known for his tense, and intense movies. The reason why I wouldn't watch the movie is the level of violence. According to some this movie is excessive in that regard (well, what did you expect with human sacrifice?). But other compare the level of violence with Braveheart, and I'm able to watch that one (when I look away now and then).
Januari 18th and a new movie with Sylvester Stallone: Rocky Balboa. I'm not really fond of sports movies, and boxing is really not my thing. But the trailer to this movie is pretty intriguing. And Stallone is talking more often about his christian convictions. Finally I think these underdog stories about aging boxers taking up the glove against younger opponents and the public conviction can be uplifting.
A movie with a lighter air is Arthur and the Minimoys, which will appear at february 1st. This childrens movie uses a mixture of normal images and digital animation and is about a miniature people living in the backyard. I always like to see how strange and awe inspiring everyday subjects become in a not-everyday perspective, like that of an ant... Seeing the real world with different eyes, that's one of the themes of this blog.

February 15th and another fantasymovie made by Disney: Bridge to Terebithia. It seems to be based on a very beautifull children's novel, but some people who have seen the trailer say all subtlety of the book is lost in the movie. That would be a shame, because there's also need for more subtle childrens movies. In any case there's walking trees in this one (hardly original), but also flying elves arranges in the air. And it's about the purpose of imagination, and there can't be too many movies about that in my opinion.
Night at the Museum, which shows from February 15th, is a comedy. In the museum of natural history at night the expositions come to life. The dinosaur skeletons, the lions, the life size huns and the miniature roman soldiers and cowboys. The concierge (Ben Stiller) will have a hard time controlling the mayhem. I have to see this, if only for the dinosaur. (Did I mention I like dinosaurs? Well, I do!). Oh, and the burping whale of course...
Spectacular it will be from february 22th, as Curse of the Golden Flower will reach our shores. I've written about this movie before, but this movie by the maker of Hero and House of Flying Daggers will look very beautifull. Awesome scenes, lavish costumes and a story about intrigue at the chinese court.
As I'm a writer I also look forward to Stranger than Fiction (appearing march 1st), in which a accountant hears a voice inside his head narrating his life. Soon he discoveres he's the protagonist in the new novel of a well known author. An author known by killing her protagonists at the end of all her books. Luckily she has a case of writers block... This stories lead to questions about our existence and the way we live our lives. And it's directed by the maker of Finding Neverland, one of my favorites...
Of course there's allways room for a beautifull science fiction movie. And The Fountain, which we can watch from march 8th, looks very beautifull to me. And complicated. Three men in three times (1500, 2006 en 2500) seek the fountain of youth... It should be more of a romantic drama than action spectacle, but the imagery certainly is impressive. All made without using computers.
March 8th we will have to choose, because this is also the day Pan's Labyrinth will appear. A kind of a fairytale for grown ups, about the power of innocence and the evil that men do. An intriguing movie. I expect this to be another movie I will have to look away from now and again, but I think I will not be able to live with myself if I don't go see it. Movies about the power of imagination, growing up and overgrown toads are fascinating to me.
Finally we will receive our required dose of the classics at march 22th with The 300. Three hundred spartans agains a half million enemies. Based on a graphic novel, so don't expect realism, but it will certainly be heroic. The background is fully computer animated. After seeing Troy again this week, I'm ready for this!
