levensechte dino's!

[Well, my lonely hatchetfish seems to have joined his fellows in the larger group. But he is still a bit smaller than the rest, although he has been in my aquarium longer. I hope he will survive...
As I write this down, I have to think of the TV-series Prehistoric Park, which I bought on DVD in London (and is shown on television in the Netherlands). In that series the same things are said, but about dinosaurs and mammoths. 'Hmmm... Those Ornithomimus are a bit restless. They seem a bit distraught... what could be wrong?' And of course I'm perched forward in my seat, because of the terrific idea of this series: a zoo with extinct animals and a TV-documentary that presents it as real, with the newest special effects? I think it is terrific. I've watched all six episodes and was smiling all the time. Still, I want to note that I liked the earlier episodes of Walking with Dinosaurs (also with Nigel Marven) and Swimming with Seamonsters) a bit more. Maybe showing time travel disturbs the illusion. But the idea to send a Steve Irwin-like wildlifepresenter to walk with two meter long millipides, three meter high terrorbirds, dinosaurs with four wings and fifteen meter long crocodiles is pure genius. 'Suspension of disbelief' is very easy, only a little step of faith is needed to believe it's really so. And I do so want to believe. It's my deep desire to see those extinct animals (and plants: the large ferns of the carboniferous era) like they were when they lived. To watch the herdes of dinosaurs pass, to know how a woolly rhinoceros lived, and how Incivosaurs courted... Those things are just not known and are subjects of imagination (coupled with good science ofcourse). But TV-series like this one can give an approximation of these lost worlds. And whoa... can they! Some episodes are really touching, like when martha the mammoth is ill, or when the pups of the last sabertoothcat have died.
In the first episode (which I watched for the second time this evening with my brother) T. rex and Triceratops are shown. And they do what should have been done in the movie Jurassic Park... A fight! (exactly what we played with our toy-dinosaurs. Real boys). I don't know if I'm able to explain why I'm so enthusiastic about it. It has something to do with these strange creatures, their raw power, something about danger and adventure. The last episode was about the giant crocodile Deinosuchus. And that one featured in my first novel Joost and Cliff at the island of pterodactyls! A crododile fifteen meter long, larger that even I had imagined it would be. And the end of that episode could have been pulled from one of my own stories. Brilliant!
I have to conclude that it feels good to bring that deep desire for a lost world up again. I do hope and pray that this desire also will be fulfilled. I look forward to the guided tour through the history of life on earth, by the Creator himself...
In the mean time visit this link to the series website. If you click on 'Episodes' you'll find some small movies that give a small sample of what to expect. Enjoy!]

Allemaal kijken dus!

[My good friend Cornell has posted new pictures at his weblog Cradle of Dreams! And without letting me know about it. That's what I get for not checking his blog daily. The pictures he posted are as always beautifull. Very pretty birds and flowers. And food that is really mouthwatering... It does induce desire...
And also as always Cornells descriptions with his pictures are not devoid of humour. Check them out!]

links voor christen-fantasyliefhebbers

Pfew...
Dus hier zonder uitstel vier links:

[Phew, it's 22.00 o' clock. It's been a hard days night and I've been working like a dog, to quote the beatles. Busy at work, busy on the train, busy cleaning my fishtanks. No double post today, sorry. But last weekend you had nothing to complain about, I think. And today's post can keep you entertained for quite a while.
It turns out I'm not the only christian on the world wide web interested in reading and writing fantasy. That's a relief. I do believe that the foundation of the modern fantasygenre was laid by two christian writers: J.R.R. Tolien and C.S. Lewis. And furthermore I believe that the purpose of the genre: the resurrection of desire for another world and trying to fulfill that desire, comes close to the purpose of the christian faith. Jesus too told stories to get people to think, to incite their desire for something better, transcendant, and to point them at last to the kingdom of heaven, that surpasses the fulfillment of all our desires. That's why it's tragic that some christians fear fantasy. Yes, wicca and gothic do claim the genre for themselves, mainly because they run paralel to the same kinds of desires. But these can only provide a false, temporary fulfillment. They can only fill the deep desire of a human heart for a short time, because like Augustin said: "Our hearts are restless, until they find rest in You."
So without further ado four links.
First one to a nice website about christian SF and fantasy, fittingly titled 'where the map ends'. Their call to christians to be more creative is something I second. Where are the christian Steven Eriksons? The J.K. Rowlings? (Ah, but she is a christian. At least she is a member of a church.)

The second one concerns a blog of a christian who loves to read and write SF and fantasy. So some kind of a colleague of me. His blog is entertaining, especially when he writes about books and movies. He turns out to like Doctor Who too!

Then a list with reviews of christian fantasynovels. There were few I already knew about. And from the reviews I think there are some pretty good ones among them, some maybe coming close to the level of Lewis and Lawhead. Do read the mainpage, because there are a lot more novels reviewed.

Finally a blog of one of my favorite filmreviewers, Jeffrey Overstreet. Besides his articles about movies he has written a fantasynovel: Auralia's Colors. And what's more, he's found a publisher. At this blog more about this novel, which had an interesting premise. If I can find it, I surely want to read it.

Well, I think you have enough to read the next few days. Sleep well!]

[Sometimes there's some old news on this blog.
For example it's already one and a half week ago that I went to the cinema with my brother. The day before I went to London. Still, I'd like to write something about the movie we saw that day, and advise you to also watch the movie. Why? Because one of the messages of this movie closely parallels what this blog is all about.
I'm talking about Lady in the Water, by director M. Night Shyamalan ( The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable etcetera).
Maybe you are thinking by yourself: I don't like scary movies. But this is not a scary movie. There are some tense moments, but it's more like an exciting fairytale. You have to see it as a fairytale. Things happen that are not directly logical, but it's the same as in the stories: there's a higher logic at work, the logic of story.
As always Shymalan tells his tale with beautifull images. He is a master at that. And in the building of tension he's no amateur either. Still, I don't think this is his best movie ever. It's a little bit hard to feel with the main characters, and there are some things that pull the viewer out of the story: the cynical fate of the filmcritic and the role of Shyamalan himself.
But what a story it is... It tells about a waternymph, whit the name 'story', who appears in the pool of an apartmentcomplex. She is found by attendant Cleveland Heep, and he takes care of her. Soon he discovers the waternymphs feature in a chinese bedtime story. In order to bring Story back to her own world he has to find among the inhabitants of the apartmentcomplex the people that can fulfill the other roles in her story. Only when every one of them knows what his or her role is the way is clear... But it's not as simple as that...
To know the rest of the story, you'll have to watch the movie yourself, but I do want to tell you why it speaks to my desire. I also do not want to believe my life is without purpose, that I'm caught in a pattern of work, sleep and eating, of failure and disappointments. I believe my life is more important. Maybe it's not visible from the outside, but I do have an irreplaceable role in the larger story. We all live in a story. Everything we do or say can sway the outcome. And like every hero we have to find the courage to take on our role in the story. When we don't assume our responsability, and do not take our place, something is irrevocably lost. This is no romantic fantasy, no wishfull thinking. It's reality. Just like the people in the apartments in Lady in the Water we dicover that our daily life up till now ws practice. If we look closer we see our real role. And just like them we need to join together. We need eachother. Each of us has a different task, and only together we will come to our full purpose. And finally: Our personal stories are taken up in a much larger story: the story of God, who fights to save people, who seeks us and wants us close to Him. And we know the end: when we have fulfilled our role, have fought the battle of our lives, we will come to Tol Eressëa, the last harbour...
Watch the movie and think about it: how important is your life? What is your role in the story?

Vreemde aquaria...

[Yesterdays post about hatchetfish inspired me to search the internet for pictures of fish tanks. I soon found some very strange ones. Like this one: fish tanks inside an icesculpture. Scroll down for a bit and you'll see them. The fish seem to be protected from the cold, but still... weird...

The next one I would like to see on my weddingday. A cake with incorporated a fishtank. The things they do for love.

But the next one is weirder still: a tank inside a sink. I would like to brush my teeth above that sink...]

Bijlzalmpjes!

[It took some time, but it was worth the wait. As of today, my lonely hatchetfisch(Carnegiella strigata) finally has some company. Last spring I bought some of these hatchetfisch from someone from the internet. But because of the low temperatures and the long journey to Delft when I arived home only three of seven were alive, and of these only one survived the night. That one hatchetfish turned out to be a tough one: he ate life food and dry food and showed his best colours. But he always stood all by himself on a spot in the corner. He missed company, these fish need to be kept in a shoal. Since that day I've been searching for these bizarrely formed fish every time I visited an aquariumshop. But I often saw it's larger cousin, but not the marmored hatchetfisch. And the one time I saw them they almost all of them missed an eye. That was horrifying. Today the shop had a large shoal of marmored hatchetfish and ofcourse I took home six of them. They are swimming in my tank right now. Their colors are not as good as those in the picture (not my picture obviously). And the old lonely hatchetfish has not yet decided to join his fellows, but I think he will in time.
Hatchetish are as strangely shaped because they have extremely powerfull pectoral fins. They can move these fins so fast that they can fly for a short distance. A hatchetfish can fly for three meters. The well known 'flying fish' can only glide. Hatchetfish are the real 'flying fishes'. Now I can only hope they won't fly out of my tank...]

Toffe wetenschap

Wetenschap is namelijk cool!

[Before everybody thinks I'm only excited about movies and novels I'll quickly post some messages about recent scientific discoveries. Because science is cool. With every new discovery so many new possibilities unfold: life on other planets, new species of dinosaur, the mechanism of the cell. And at the same time those new discoveries make it clear how little we actually know. They only serve to ignite our imagination: what more is out there? What planet are there for us to discover? What kinds of bacteria haven't we found yet? What theories will have to be replaced. I at least find myself fascinated by those subjects.
Last weekend in London I actually talked with my friends about how I came to fail as a scientist during my studies. They pointed me to the fact that the daily existence of a scientist no longer has any romantic value, it's a matter of hard work and perseverance. I had to acknowledge that. It's why at the long run working as a scientist was not my cup of tea. In the laboratory I found only little of the enthousiasm, the childlike excitement and the pure fun of new knowledge that I need to function. To stand with a pipet for months and only find a vague smear on a blot as a result, that's not for me. That's why I just write about science and in that way keep my passion.
Therefore without further ado, here are the most fantastical discoveries of the past week:

The first one is news for the Indiana Joneses in my public: the discovery of the oldest written languaget in the New World. It concerns a stone with inscriptions made by the Olmec, an old South-American civilisation. The inscriptions are almost 3000 years old, dated back to some 900 years B.C. The oldest known written texts from both North- and South-America found previously dated back to 600 years B.C. And according toexperts it is possible that the script was developed much earlier, written on perishable materials like wood.

Then some news that's more on the field of theoretical fysics. I can hardly understand it myself, I would have to talk to Marten for that, but it turns out the predictions of Einsteins theory of general relativity are for 99,95 percent correct. This was shown by measurements of two quickly rotating pulars (neutronstars (very heavy stars) that project very regular bundles of radiation). Yes, I said it would be complicated.

The discovery of a planet around another star is hardly newsworthy anymore, but sometimes a planet is found that defies the expectations of computermodels. The new planet HAT-P-1 is 24% lighter that predicted by theory. That means more calculations for the astronomers. dan door de theorie werd voorspeld. HAT-P-1 is 1,38 times larger than Jupiter, but it's mass is only half that of our planet. Just like Saturn it's density is less than that of water, and if you would be able to find a bathtub large enough this planet would float in it.

More news about planets in other solar systems: calculations on computermodels have shown that in other solar systems there are probably many more planets where life would flourish that formerly expected. The models concern the systems with a so called hot Jupiter, a large gasplanet close to its star instead of far away like the gasplanets in our solarsystem. According to the new models a solar system with a hot Jupiter probably also has earth-like planets covered by a deep ocean of liquid water. A subject for new SF-novels...

But there are enough possibilities yet for live in our own solar system. Here a bit about a recent book that lists the possibilities.

"The colour of summer," repeated Blaise. "What is it?"
Taliesin thought for a moment. "It is... mmmm... Gold!" he declared triumphantly.
"You mean green, do you not, Taliesin? I think autumn should be gold."
"No, replied Taliesin. "Autumn is grey."
"Grey?" Blaise shook his head in bewilderment. "The things you say, Taliesin. What do you think, Hafgan?"
The druid did not answer. "What colour is spring, Taliesin?"
"White"
"And winter? What colour?"
"Winter is black."
Blaise laughed. "Summer is the only season of colour in your world, Taliesin. do you realize that?"
"Of course," he answered without hesitation, swinging the willow wand easily. "That is why I am going to be King of the Summer, and my realm will be known as the Kingdom of Summer. While I am king there will be no winter, no autumn, and no spring."
"Only summer?" said Blaise suddenly serious. He had caught the wistful note in the boys voice and had stopped laughing.
"Only summer. There will be no darkness and no dying, and the land will flow with all good things." Taliesin became quiet then and said no more.

Taliesin's smile was quick, but it was also sad. "The world is ours for the making," he said lightly, but he turned back to the mountains and gazed for a long time without speaking.
When he did speak again, his voice sounded far away. "I have seen a land shining with goodness where each man protects his brother's dignity as readily as his own, where war and want have ceased an all races live under the same law of love and honour.
I have seen a land bright with truth, where a man's word is his pledge, and falsehood is banished, where children sleep safe in their mothers' arms and never know fear or pain. I have seen a land where kings extend their hands in justice rather than reach for the sword, where mercy, kindness and compassion flow like deep water over the land, and men revere virtue, revere truth, revere beauty, above comfort, pleasure, or selfish gain. A land where peace reigns in the heart of men, where faith blazes like a beacon from every hill, and love like a fire from every hearth, where the True God is worshipped and his ways acclaimed by all
"I have seen this land, charis," he said, his hand striking his chest. "I have seen it and my heart yearns for it. It is our world as it was meant to be, and will be. The Kingdom of Summer is but a reflection of it."

[No, this message is not about the weather outside, although it really is nice and warm the past few days. But with that quality of late summer: the golden mist, the darkening leaves and the feeling it will be over soon.
But this message is about another summer. This week I read again the book Taliesin by Stephen Lawhead. Firstly because I read that Hood had appeared, but also because my friend Hans was reading this series and he compared me with a bard. I read Taliesin for the first time five years ago, so I already knew the end, but still it remained fresh and compelling, largely because of Lawheads' descriptions that use all five senses, and sometimes the sixth. Taliesin is the first novel in the Pendragon-series, a cycle of book about King arthur, but he only appears in the third part (with the titel Arthur, ofcourse). In this book Lawhead describes what came before and he mixes three different legends: firstly the legend about Atlantis, the mythical islandkingdom that disappeared into the ocean thousands of years ago, secondly the keltic legends about the bard Taliesin, and thirdly the legend about Joseph of Arimathea, who came to England carrying the Holy Grail. Lawhead places these legends in a convincing setting at the end of Roman rule about England, a time when christianity began to grow. And in that process the True God stands opposed to powers like the horned god and Mithras (seemingly also known in Atlantis)... I appreciate the way Lawhead describes the druids, as seeking for the truth behind their gods, but at the same time dangerously experimenting with the other world.
And, as always, his description bring forth desire for other places and other ways of life. The bulldance of Charis (the princess of Atlantis) is described in a way that makes you feel the sand of the arena between your toes, but at the same time the exitement of adventure flows through your veins... And I want to belong to the keltic people of Elphin, the Cymry, who lead a simple live, but with honour, selfrespect, love and able to share their emotions without shame.
But what I desire the most is the kingdom of summer. It's the image the bard Taliesin sees in a vision, one he always sings about. Here is a part of the novel:

And here is another description:

Tes, that's what I desire. That's what I want to bring across (maybe that's why Hans called me a bard). And the kingdom of summer will come. The kingdom where the one True King reigsn, the king that Arthur and his 'kingdom of summer' were only a pale reflection of. The kingdom of heaven.]

En 'The eagles are coming! The eagles are coming!'.

[As you undoubtedly noted from earlier posts the writer of this blog is an unashamed Tolkienfanboy. And it's not only his books that take high places in my personal top ten, but also the movies are along my all time favorites. I want to watch them again soon, if only to let you share in all the desire inspiring moments. The collaboration betwee J.R.R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson leads to the beautifull descriptions being translated into poëtical images. At the same time the stories echo the christian worldview of Tolkien, who definitely saw the 'Large Story', the story from which all our human stories come...
So it won't be a surprise to you that I'm enthusiastic about the following news:
There will most likely be not one, but two movies made of The Hobbit!
Two Hobbit-movies? I'm not sure the story is large enough for that. The Hobbit is in nature more a childrens book, in which the most unrealistic things can happen, not a richly detailed mythology like Lord of the Rings. That doesn't mean I don't look forward to the movie. There are at least four reasons to be enthousiastic:
Smaug, the dragon. Yes, a dragon! That's always cool, movies with dragons...
Gollem. Hopefully they will be able to snare Andy Serkis for the role again. The game of tricks between Gollem and Bilbo is very funny.
The woodelves under king Thranduil. The kingdom Legolas originated. A different elvish empire that the two we've seen before (Rivendell and Lothlorien), and another opportunity for the designpeople to really enjoy themselves.
And: 'The eagles are coming! The eagles are coming!'. Thé moment of eucatastrofe in The Hobbit. In the moment when all seems lost, Bilbo looks up and seas the eagles. Goosebumps. Then he loses consciousness and misses the end of the battle. But such a moment of hope when there's no hope, of an unexpected last moment rescue, of majestic birds swooping down from the sky speaks deeply to our desire.
I do look forward to that moment, when "He comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see him." (revelations 1 verse 7).

Talking about dragons (and about Peter Jackson): Jackson has bought the rights to Temeraire, a fantasystory about the Napoleonic era, but one in which the french and english army possess dragons. And it's a series to boot. Yes!

And finally, here's the trailer for Eragonm this years fantasymovie. I wasn't able yet to watch the trailer (I have to upgrade firefox first), but what I heard about it is rather good. At least there's dragons in it!]

[Okay, one message then.
This one I found when I searched for news about animals to publish in the journal I now work for.
It is this: There is a talking elephant.
This elephant can imitate some sounds of his keeper, so well they do really sound human. But it's not clear yet whether it means anything at all...
There are lots of story's about talking animals, or people who can talk to animals. According to Tolkien it's an old desire of man to be able to communicate with animals. He brings the matter back to the fact that man is seperated from nature since the fall and we long for that time when there was no seperation. The time the animals came to Adam by themselves to receive their names. de tijd dat de dieren uit zichzelf naar Adam toekwamen om hun naam te krijgen. The bible tells that a time like that will return: the lion will graze with the lamb, the bear with the ox and a child will be able to put it's hand in an adders lair. I look forward to that.]

Even snel... Apocalypto

Sorry)

[Well, you've had to do without my updates for some days, and I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you again. I don't think this evening will result in many more posts. I'm really walking on my last legs, that's how tired I am. I'm now actually trying to keep my eyes open. Just like Mr. Bean, when he's in church, remember that one? Okay, so I'm not falling asleep while sitting behind the computer, it's not that bad yet, but it's close... Anyway, a long essay about Tol Eressëa is out of the question. The only thing I desire now is a good nights sleep...
But I don't want to leave you without inspiration, so here's a link to the trailer for Apocalypto, the new movie by Mel Gibson.
It's a movie about a lost civilization: the Maya. The trailer already contains spectacular images: pyramides, the tropical rainforest, exotic costumes. But also an epic story: a man who escapes a horrible fate, on his way home to his beloved. Just like the Odyssee... (Yes, I know the classics)
The only thing I'm uncomfortable about is the cutting out of hearts that was a mainstay of those days. In the trailer it's only suggested, but I don't know how much restraint the finished movie will show. There's a readon I look away from Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom. I have to think of Chestertons book I read lately. He divides the old religions in two kinds, the relatively innocent mythologies, more like an imaginative view of reality, with gods people do not really believe in, and the real idols, who people asked favors of by performing perverse rituals and sacrifices (often human sacrifices). The religions of South-America for a large part belonged to the second category. The story's from the first category, story's people used to make sense of their surroundings, were finally fulfilled in the Large Story: The God who became human. The demonic forces of the second category will disappear in the pool of fire and brimstone...
(It turned out to be quite a long post after all... sorry)

Verlangens in Londen

[Well, I'm back from metropole London.
Sadly I just discovered that al pictures on my digital camera were unclear. And I wanted to show you some beautifull views and soothing places. It just can't be.
So I have to entertain you with some short descriptions. Because London did speak to my desires.
And not only to my desire for hobbit-like breakfasts (with egg, bacon, sausage and tomato... Mmmm) or for coffee (banaca caramel frappucino at Starbucks... Mmmmm), but also my desire for peaople: Ivo and Chiat gave me a inside-view of life in London and of british nature. And I saw where they worked. Being together was very good. And then there were dinosaurs...
We went to the Museum Of Natural History and wow... that was really something! I say all kinds of fossilized dino's (and other critters) I only knew from books. For example the arms of deinocheirus (one of the dinosaurs in my first novel), two and a half meters long with large claws. Impressive to say the least. But they also showed the skeleton of baryonix. A fish-eating dinosaur with a crokodile-like head, a skeleton of a New-Zealand Moa, a giant sloth, lots of Ichthyosaurs and a moving model of a T. rex... I was drooling... I also liked the fossils of extinct species of elephant and rhino.
But of course in London are things besides fossils. Like books. Ivo and Chiat let me visit a bookstore (with a large SF and fantasy department) and in Harrods I even found the last book by Stephen Lawhead: Hood. Obviously I bought it. And in the Virgin Megastore I found the DVD of Prehistoric Park, a series by the makers of Walking with Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs, what can go wrong? The archeological expositions in the Museum of London were interesting too. But the surrealist art in Tate's was too much for me.
The moment that spoke to my desires the loudest was in a park behind a church. Just a few meter from the rouad there was a round pond (two meters), with clear water full of plants and large fish. In the middle was a fountain, dripping with water, covered with moss... The pond was in the shade, but a couple of meters on the sunlight fell on an old grave. It was a place to find rest, with the sound of water, the noise of the street dampened and warm sunlight. A place that belonged to Tol Eressëa. No doubt about it.]

[A short post to let you all know I will leave to London tomorrow. Five hours from now the alarmclock will wake me. Thats 5.20 am.... AARGH... So I can be at the harbour at twenty to seven and leave from there at twenty past seven.
I do look forward to it. Not to the rising early part, but to going to London. I've never been there before, but I heard good things about it.
I will be back at monday and hope to update my blogs then. ]

Een heel lange verloving

Gisteren met Mervin een hele goede film gekeken, die vorig jaar in de bioscoop was: Un long dimance de fiancailles (of in het engels: A very long engagement), van de franse regisseur Jeunnet (bekend van Amelie). Laat me ten eerste zeggen: de film is heel erg mooi gemaakt.

Haar diepste hoop is werkelijkheid geworden. De hoop van de hemel.

[Yesterday I watched a very beautifull movie, together with Mervin. A movie that was in the cinema last year: Un long dimance de fiancailles (or in english: A very long engagement), by the french director Jeunnet (Amelie). First let me say that the movie is beautifully made. The way the shots are built, the colors, the lighting. Everything works together to create a poetic atmosphere, even the scenes in the trenches of world war I. The effect there is one of despair and loathing. Secondly: the movie is filled with a rather subtle humour. We aren't spoonfed with it, but it's there. For example the postman trying to ride his bicycle on the gardenpath and the inner monologue of Mathilde. Thirdly: The use of black and white images to recreate the atmosphere of that time is very nicely done.
But what ultimately makes the movie as compelling as it is, is its subject: hope.
The whole story is about Mathildes hope that her fiancé Manech has survived a horrible execution in World War I. So close was their connection, that for her he can't be dead. And so she grasps even the smalles thread of hope and questions fate: "If in seven seconds someone will enter the cabin, he's still alive." Even when she visits the grave of Manech, she will not give up: she doesn't yet know all that has happened. He could still be alive.
Unbelievable? Unrealistic? Maybe. But hope is what man needs the most. It has been said that man can do without oxygen for more that a minute, but not a second without hope. What makes a clinical depression as hard as it is? The absence of hope.
I want to point you to two characteristics of hope. The first is: you hope for something you desire. Nice weather for instance. The second is: objectively you can't be sure it will happen. I do not hope the sun will rise tomorrow. I already know. I hope tomorrow the sun will shine, because that can not be predicted. Not by our weathermen at least.
I hope I will find a new job next year. I hope I will once meet a girlfriend. I hope... "A hope "Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently." (Romans 8 verse 24)
The greatest hope is the hope for what we most desire and what scientifically is least sure... Because who did ever rise from the death in a scientific experiment.
I saw something new in the end of the movie this time

(spoiler warning).

In the last scene Mathilde, clothed in white, enters a house. We see her disappear in blackness. Here parents and friends remain, standing closely together. (I think this is a symbol for death). Later Mathilde appears outside in the garden. The sun is shining, birds are singing and she sees her beloved, like he was before the war. And the first thing he says to her, is what he said when they first met ten years ago. And looking at her face, she is filled with joy. Her deepest hope has become reality. The hope of heaven. ]

Schoonmaken...

Vooral Berend was erg enthousiast!

[I still owed all of you this picture.
Last friday my brother and I cleaned the house. My brother was very enthousiastic. It's good to see everything shine once again. It reminds me of the renewal, the freshness of the new earth.
Yes, it does.
Watch for it yourself when you next clean your apartment. "Behold, I make all things new...", Jesus says. Not: I shall make all new things.]

[It's no secret: I'm kind of interested in dinosaurs. As a boy I devoured books about dinosaurs and my DVD of 'Walking with dinosaurs' is one of my favorites. And I track every new discovery about dinosaurs. Every newly unearthed species makes my mouth water.
And my mouth will not lack water, at least according to a recent
news story.
This note on the Nature website states that there are 1300 groups of dinosaurs not yet identified. That means that with 527 known groups of dinosaurs we haven't found two third of all dinosaurs!
Who knows what extraordinary fossils we will find? Still larger herbivores, stronger carnivores, more evidence of parental care, more intermediates between bird and dinsoaur? The possibilities are endless.
I wish I had studied to become a paleontologist...]

[I intended to write a longer post today about Star Trek and about a couple of good episodes I saw the past few days (that spoke to my desire for renewel in family relations), but that will have to wait for tomorrow.
In the meantime, I found on the internet a video of een video of captain Picard, breaking into dance!
Well, what do you know?}

Waterballet...

Terecht!

[Sometimes I'm glad that I am home alone. Like this evening.
And sometimes I say to myself I should act sooner when I see something is going wrong. Like this evening.
I always use the same bucket for cleaning my aquarium. There is (was) a small tear in the side for more than a year. A tear of a centimeter or two and I always had to fill the bucked carefully, so it wouldn't spill. This evening I had been busy cleaning my auarium. I only had to refill with half a bucket in my large aquarium. I filled the bucket and lift it from under the tap. Then suddenly it tears, it falls from my hands and there's five liters of water on the kitchenfloor. Quickly get my mop and try to dry it. Hopefully it won't spill down the walls by the neighbours under me. I'm happy it didn't happen in my room.
It does wake you up. I have to buy a new bucket soon, because the other bucket we use for mopping has lots of soap in it, and I can't use it.
Does this have a link with desire?
Not directly, but it reminds me that here on earth everything is submitted to decay. Even buckets. And I look forward to the time everything is made new. "Nothing with a curse on it will be there," according to Revelation Openbaring 3 vers 5. No more playing with water in Tol Eressëa, or it has to be for fun...
On the internet today I found the website for the Dutch fish welfare. Comparable to the animal welfare, but for fish. Ofcourse a very good initiative. At last people who recognize that fish can suffer and deserve a good life.]

Elfde Star Trek film...

{No long essays about desire today. I'm just not in the right mood today. But I found an interesting newsstory about the next Star Trek movie.
As you probably realised from earlier messages I am a Star Trek fan. That's why I look forward to the eleventh movie that's now in preproduction. The movie will return to the younger years of the famous captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. While they will be played by different actors (Matt Damon as Kirk?) there seems to be a chance the originals, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy will have a small role.
And in related news: the original Star Trek series will be updated with new Special Effects. I'm interested...]

[Finally, the waiting is over! The new book by my favorite christian author Stephen R. Lawhead has been released.
I'm talking about Hood, a story about, you can guess, Robin Hood.
I don't know much about the story, mostly because Lawhead doesn't work on his website very much. But knowing Lawhead he will not have chosen for a stantard story about the well known hero. There will be a strong connection to authentic keltic and anglosaxon cultures and customs, there will be a healthy dose of mythology (complete with sympathetic druids) and there will be a connection with 'The Swift Sure Hand' (his favorite name for God). And the book is the first in the King Raven Trilogy. Yes! There will be more!
The thing I like about Lawhead are his evocative descriptions (he can transport you to a time or place in your imagination, complete with smell, sounds and light). For example, he describes meals that make my mouth water. His fightscénes and battles are also compelling to read. But that's not the only thing: he creates sympathetic hero's, who wrestle with their faith, without there being a religious layer over his books. He never seems preachy. On his website he answers a reader, who asks if he is a christian fantasywriter: "I'm a christian, I write novels, sometimes I write fantasy." I like that answer. He is not a writer of christian fantasynovels. He is a christian. And that will be visible in his novels. But he doesn't need to preach. That's something I want to emulate.
I own almost all books by Stephen Lawhead and recently began to read them again. I began this summer with Byzantium and soom I'll start with his Pedragon-cycle. You will probably read more about that later. ]

Nieuwe oosterse film!

Cool....

[My brother Marten pointed me to a new filmtrailer on the internet.
Its the new martial artsmovie by Zhang Yimou (or Yimou Zhang, I never know with those names), the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers. These are two of the most beautifull movies I've ever seen. And with beautifull I mean the appearance of the movie: the constumes, the fights that resemble ballet, the colors of the surroundings, the way the images are set up and the elegant movements of the actors: these movies show a beauty missing in a lot of western films. A beauty that speaks to the heart. According to John Eldredge beauty and pain are the two things that reacht to the human heart. I think I know what he means. Beauty is not something that can be described scientifcally, it moves us, it does something to us. It reminds us of something. Wasn't Gods creation once 'very good'?
The story in these movies is often clearly different compared with typical hollywoodmovies and there often is no 'happy end'. Hero had a very interesting storystructure and a surprising climax. The story of House of Flying Daggers meant less to me.
And now the news that Zhang Yimou has made a new martial artsmovie in China. Here is the official homepage of Curse of the Golden Flower, and another Trailer.
And it seems he didiit again. The images are just beautifull. The colors are very different than those in his first two movies (this one has more of a contrast between golden fabrics and black). En are those ninja's? Cool... ]

[When according to the Da Vinci Code nothing is true of church history, what will remain of Star Wars after the Da Vader Code?]

[I've always been fascinated by biological communities that are in one way or another different than the one I'm used to. In most wellknown ecosystems the most important roles are filled by mammals. Think of Africa: there are herbivores (zebra's, wildebeast, elephants), carnivores (lions, leopards), carrioneaters (hyena's and vultures), insectivores etcetera, etcetera... In Europe it's herbivores like deer and swine, and carnivores like wolves and bears.
In my last post I wrote about systems in the deep ocean not based on sunlight, but on phosphate and methane from the oceanbottom. Still in this ecosystem you see animals fulfilling the same roles as exist in normal systems: there are creaters that eat bacteria, carnivores and carrioneaters...
Another example is that of Australia, where all knots in the net are taken by marsupial animals. At least that was the case before man introduced the dingo there. Researchers have found fossil marsupial lions for inastance, but also enormous walking birds of prey and fossils of six meters long monitorlizards...
Today I again read an older newsmessage about the bizarre ecosystem of New-Zealand. Until a couple of centuries ago on New-Zealand mammals and marsupials were practically absent. The entire community was made up of birds. There were giant planteating birds, the moa's, but also enormous eagles. Every available spot (nuteter, insectivore, herbivore, carnivore, carrioneater) was filled by birds. And every bird was exactly adapted for its place in the 'circle of life'. Sadly many of these birds became extinct after man discovered New-Zealand and introduced mmmals. It's something I can get very sad about. It really is a lost world... ]

[Here I am again!
This morning some links about two subjects I'm very interested in, that fill me with great joy and a deep desire everytime I see or read something about them.
Extremophil bacteria and life in the deep sea.
These subjects have a lot to do with each other, by the way. First the bacteria. Not to be confused with disease causing germs, these are creatures adapted to the most diverse circumstances. There are species that feel best in boiling water, in high concentrations of salt, in highly acidic water, under an unimaginable pressure, or frozen in ice. Some species survive in a totally dry environment or in the vacuum of space. That's whay they are called extremophil. I always find it fascinating to read about the adaptability of life on Earth. Even on the most inhospitable places (in layers of rock kilometers beneath the bottom of the ocean) life thrives...
Here a short article with some examples of
extreme bacteria. A very intresting example: the bacteria living
in brinelakes at the bottom of the ocean. The existence of these briny lakes beneath the surface is weird and then there is life too...
Many of these bacteria were first identified on the so called 'black smokers', where superheated water (sometimes more thatn 400 degrees celsius) escapes from the oceanfloor. This water contains fosfate and methane, which feeds bacteria totally independent of sunlight. And countless specialised clams, worms, shrimps and crabs live from these bacteria. The existence of these ecosystems in the abyss fascinates me endlessly. Thats why I like the site of this research organisation. Check for the discovery of the Yeti-crab, the abominable snowcrab...
I also found another site with lots of
pictures and video's of oceanexploration.
Its fascinating. There are so many places on our planet we know nothing about. We still know less about the bottom of the ocean than about the surface of the moon. There is so much left to explore... ]
