Tekenfilms en dinosaurussen (animation and dinosaurs)

Na mijn potentieel controversiele gedachten in mijn vorige bericht, hier weer zoals vanouds wat nieuws van het science fiction- en fantasyfront.

De eerste is dat er een tiendelige tekenfilmserie wordt gemaakt over dr Who. Dr. Who is zoals jullie weten een van mijn favoriete TV-series, met een perfecte combinatie van bizarre verhalen, buitenaardse wezens, Engelse humor en excentrieke hoofdpersonen. En deze tekenfilmserie belooft heel interessant te worden: hij speelt zich namelijk af op verschillende planeten buiten ons zonnestelsel (vast zo bizar dat het veel te duur zou worden ze te filmen), en de schrijver en de acteurs van de 'normale' Dr. Who werken eraan mee. Hoe meer extrasolaire planeten, hoe beter!

En dan iets heel anders: dinosaurussen. Maar niet zo heel erg anders, want het is Engels (net als Dr. Who) en het wordt een televisieserie. Met dinosaurussen. Tja, wat zal ik zeggen? Ik beweer natuurlijk altijd dat alles wat ook maar een hint van een dinosaurus bevat boven kritiek verheven is, maar de waarheid is dat televisieprogramma's met dinosaurussen ook wel eens in kwaliteit te wensen over kunnen laten. Zo was de miniserie Dinotopia niet de beste tv-serie die ooit was gemaakt. Het verhaal zat vrij slecht in elkaar, de aankleding was niet zo overtuigend en de prestaties van de acteurs waren niet echt geweldig. Maar de dinosaurussen waren natuurlijk gaaf. Deze serie is eigenlijk het omgekeerde van Prehistoric Park, waar mensen terug in de tijd gaan naar de dinosaurussen. In de serie Primeval komen de dinosaurussen door gaten in de tijd in onze wereld terecht. Een beetje zoals die Tyrannosaurus in de film The Lost World! Het zijn wel verhalen zoals ik die altijd verzon toen ik op de basisschool zat (in feite kwam in mijn eerste verhaal dat ik ooit in mijn vrije tijd schreef een mosasaurus terecht in een zwembad in Alphen. Het heette dan ook De Mosasaurus) en de dinsaurussen worden gemaakt door degenene die Walking with Dinosaurs maakten. Dus ik ben benieuwd. In elk geval: er zitten dinosaurussen in, dus het is boven kritiek verheven...

Dan nog even voor wie geen tijd heeft om veel SF-boeken te lezen. Deze site heeft ze allemaal voor je in een paar regels samengevat. Lachen! Alleen kan dan het lezen van de site weer veel tijd gaan kosten...

[After my potentially controversial thoughts in my last post, here some honest news from the SF- and fantasyfront.

The first news is a ten part cartoon version of Dr. Who is in the works. As you know Dr. Who is one of my favorite television series, with a perfect combination of bizarre stories, aliens, British humor and eccentric protagonists. And this cartoon series promises to be interesting: it takes place on alien planets (probably too bizarre to feature in the real life production), and the writer and actors of the regular series are co-operationg. The more extrasolar planets, the better!

And then for something completely different: dinosaurs. That is, not too different, because first it's British (just like Dr. Who) and it's about a television series. With dinosaurs in it. Well, what can I say? You've probably noticed I think everything with dinosaurs in it is above all criticism, but the truth is televions shows about dinosaurs can be a bit below average in quality. Like the mini series Dinotopia, not really the best series ever created. The story wasn't much to write home about, the production values not too good and the actors neither. But the dinosaurs were cool. This series is in a way the reverse of Prehistoric Park, where people travel back in time to the age of dinosaurs. In the series Primeval the dinosaurs enter our age through holes in space time. So it will be a bit like the T. rex in The Lost World! These are the kind of stories I tended to make up as a child on prep school (in fact the first story I wrote in my spare time was about a mosasaur which ended up in a swimming pool) and the dinosaurs are created by the makers of Walking with Dinosaurs. So, I'm excited. In any case, there's dinosaurs in it. So it's really above all criticism...
