Piraten, ruimteschepen en avatars (Pirates, spaceships and avatars)

Aah... Wat is er beter dan na een lange dag werken en tegen de stormwind inlopen (met mijn hoed in de hand, natuurlijk), dan thuiskomen en lezen over toffe, fantasievolle films die eraan komen, met muziek van Third Day op de achtergrond en een mok vol koffie (caffeinevrije weliswaar, maar toch)? Een retorische vraag, toch? Nou ja, er zijn wel betere dingen te bedenken, maar dit heeft toch ook wel zijn charme. In elk geval zal ik proberen jullie op de hoogte te brengen van het belangrijkste nieuws van de afgelopen tijd (behalve de mededeling dat de vierde Indiana Jones film dit jaar wordt opgenomen en uitkomt in mei 2008. Ja, Harrison Ford is al wat ouder, maar als Sean Connery op zijn 73de in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen kon optreden als Allan Quatermain hoor je mij niet over leeftijd zeuren. Bovendien: Spielberg regisseert...)

Mooie intro voor een film die dit jaar uitkomt: Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End. Deze serie komt volgens sommige recensenten dicht bij Indiana Jones, als het gaat om puur plezier en spanning. Ik weet dat ik bij de eerste film met een brede glimlach de bioscoop uitkwam. En bij de tweede met een brede grijns (een kraak. Hoe cool is dat? Een kraak!). Dit jaar komt de derde en er beginnen langzaam wat beelden het internet op te sijpelen. Zoals deze filmposters. Ik vind ze tof. Ze zijn sfeervol, de helden staan er intrigerend op en de sfeer lijkt wat donker en 'creepy'. Ja, dat wordt weer genieten in de bios!

Als het ze lukt Indiana Jones op tijd af te krijgen (en het zal Spielberg wel lukken), dan wordt 2008 echt weer een jaar voor filmgeeks zoals ik. Want behalve Indiana Jones keert ook Star Trek terug op het witte doek. Voor de elfde keer wel te verstaan. Maar nu gaat het niet over Picard en zijn team (die werden er ook niet jonger op), maar de serie maakt een frisse start. Het script gaat over de eerste ontmoeting tussen kapitein James T. Kirk en Mr. Spock, dus in de beginjaren van de federatie. Regisseur J.J. Abrams (bekend van Mission Impossible III en wat TV-series zoals Lost) heeft beloofd dat het verhaal tof is voor fans en toegankelijk voor niet-fans. En er was sprake dat Matt Damon Kirk zou spelen. Oh, en de originele acteur, William Shatner, heeft ook een rol, maar niet als Kirk. Ik ben benieuwd. De Star Trek verhalen snijden vaak wel diepere thema's aan over de betekenis van de mens, en onze plaats in het heelal.

De teleurstelling van Eragon (jullie hebben er geen bespreking van gelezen, omdat ik me wil richten op de positieve aspecten van films. En deze riep niet echt veel verlangens bij me op, behalve om zelf een beter verhaal te schrijven. Wat op zichzelf natuurlijk een goed verlangen is.) heeft filmmakers niet ontmoedigd zich te richten op het fantasy-genre. Gelukkig maar. Maar ze hebben wel de les geleerd te kiezen voor regisseurs die hun sporen al verdiend hebben. Zoals... M. Night Shyamalan!!! Yes!!! Als er iemand mooie, fantasievolle verhalen kan maken is hij het wel (een soort van Spielberg van nu, zeg maar) en hij heeft ook nog eens oog voor karakterontwikkeling (wat een beetje ontbrak in Eragon). Dit zou de eerste keer worden dat hij een film maakt die zich in een totaal andere wereld afspeelt (hoewel dat al een beetje gold voor The Village). De film die hij gaat maken is gebaseerd op de tekenfilmserie Avatar: The Last Airbender, die zich afspeelt in een aziatische fantsiewereld vol magie en vechtsporten, waar de laatste in een lange lijn van 'Avatars' volwassen moet worden en moet de Water-, Lucht- en Aardestreken moet beschermen tegen de Vuurnatie. Ik snap het ook niet allemaal, maar volgens mijn broer Marten is het tof.

Er is ook meer nieuws over de andere Avatar, de nieuwe film van James 'Titanic' Cameron. Klinkt allemaal erg goed, maar het duurt nog wel tot 2009... Als het net zo goed wordt als The Abyss (uit 1989, dus twintig jaar daarvoor), dan zal het het wachten waard zijn. Bovendien gaat de film zich helemaal op een buitenaardse planeet afspelen, vol buitenaardse wezens, dus het kan al bijna niet verkeerd gaan...

What's better than coming home from a long day at work and walking against the wind (with my hat firm in my hand of course) and reading about great fantastical movies in production, with music by Third Day playing on the computer and a mug of coffee (decaf, but still...)? It's a rhetorical question. Well, maybe there are better things you can imagine, but I still like this a lot. At any case, I'll try to bring you up to date on the most important movie related news stories of the past weeks (oh, and the announcement that the fourth Indiana Jones movie will be shot this year for a may 2008 release date. Yes, Harrison Ford may be showing his age, but when Sean Connery can play a convincing Allan Quatermain in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen when he's 73 years old I won't hold his age against Harrison. And Spielberg is directing...)

That's a nice introduction to a movie appearing later this year: Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End. This series, according to some critics, approaches Indiana Jones in terms of fun and excitement. I do now I left the cinema smiling after the first movie, and grinning after seeing the second (a kraken. How cool is that? A Kraken!). This year the third one is due and slowly some images start to appear around the internet. Like these filmposters. I like them. They are stylisch, the heroes pose courageously and the atmosphere so far seems dark and creepy. Yes. That's going to be a nice time in the cinema!

If they manage to get Indiana Jones finished in time (and I have all faith in Spielberg), 2008 will be a good year for filmgeeks like me. For not only Indiana Jones but also Star Trek will return to the silver screen. For the eleventh time. Not with Picard and his crew (who didn't get any younger either), but with a new start. The script is about the meeting of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, so in the first years of the federation. Director J.J. Abrams (known of Mission Impossible III and TV-series like Lost) promised the story would be accessible to fans and non-fans. And there was talk of Matt Damon playing Kirk. And William Shatner would appear, but not as Kirk. I'm excited about it. The Star Trek stories often are about deeper theme's like the meaning of man, and our place in the universe.

The disappointment of Eragon (you haven't seen a review on the blog, as I want to focus on positive aspects of movies. And this one didn't really excite much desire, except the desire to write a better story myself. Which of course is a very good desire.) hasn't discouraged the studio's of tackling the fantasy genre. Lucky us. But they learned their lesson. They are choosing directors that have already shown their talent. Like M. Night Shyamalan!!! Yes!!! If there's one director able to make beautifull, fantastical stories it's he (sort of a modern Spielberg) and he can show subtle character development (which was lacking in Eragon). This would be the first time he would make a movie that's in a totally different world (though that was true for The Village too in a way). The movie he will direct is based on a cartoonseries Avatar: The Last Airbender, that takes place in an asiatic fantasy world with magic and martial arts, where the last in a long line of 'Avatars' has to grow up and protect the Water, Air- and Earth countries against the evil Fire nation. I don't get it either, but my brother thinks it's cool.

There's also some more news aobut the other Avatar, the new movie by James 'Titanic' Cameron. It all sounds very inspiring, but it will take till 2009... If it's as good as The Abyss (from 1989, so twenty years before), it will be worth the wait. And the movie is set on an alien planet in its entirity, full of alien creatures, so it almost can't go wrong... ]
