Reis naar de zon en andere avonturen (journey to the sun and other adventures)

Ja, er is weer mooi nieuws te melden op het gebied van films. Zo is het voorstukje van de film Sunshine op het internet gekomen. De titel doet denken aan een zonnige romantische komedie, waarin de helden elkaar aan de Costa del Sol in de armen vallen, maar dat beeld kan niet verder van de waarheid zijn. Het gaat om een heftige science fiction film, waarin een team van astronauten afreist naar de zon, die op het punt staat te doven. Hun doel is met behulp van kernkoppen de zon weer aan de praat te krijgen. Veel science fiction films spelen zich ver in de toekomst af, zodat de technologie niet echt realistisch meer is, of ze gaan om buitenaardse wezen die nu op Aarde komen. Deze film gaat weer over realistisch aandoende ruimteschepen en goed onderzochte scenario's. Het schijnt dat er heel wat wetenschappers naar het script hebben gekeken. Het is natuurlijk een rampenfilm (een beetje zoals The Core en Deep Impact, wat ik goede films vond), maar de spanning gaat nu vooral komen van het psychologische aspect: een reis naar onze bron van licht zal mensen wel op de zenuwen werken, vooral als ze zo lang met elkaar op een kluitje zitten. Ik ben in elk geval benieuwd. De zon is een ongelofelijk fascinerend hemellichaam, en ik ben benieuwd hoe ze dat in beeld gaan brengen...

Ik heb eerder geschreven over een nieuwe versie van Tarzan, die in voorbereiding is. De schrijver van Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, was nogal productief. Hij schreef ook de avonturenserie John Carter of Mars. In deze verhalen komt een aardbewoner terecht op Mars (doordat hij overnacht in een grot. Dit is meer science fantasy dan science fiction. Maar dat is natuurlijk geen probleem). Op Mars leven groene mensen, allerlei monsters en reuzen. Gelukkig blijkt onze held (John Carter) in de atmosfeer van Mars over superkrachten te beschikken en hij gaat de strijd aan tegen allerlei onrecht (en hij redt de prinses. Het eerste deel heet The princess of Mars). Het klinkt wat clichématig, maar dit was het boek waar het cliché ontstond. Er wordt al tijden gewerkt aan een filmversie. Het laatste bericht is dat de rechten bij Disney zijn terecht gekomen. Misschien willen ze een serie avonturenfilms maken in de lijn van Pirates of the Caribbean, of misschien wordt het wel een computeranimatiefilm van Pixar. Het lijkt me in elk geval een mogelijkheid voor buitenaardse steden, getentakelde monsters, onvoorstelbare heldendaden en zulks. Het zou mooi zijn als er ook weer een meer realistische SF film over Mars zou komen (daar heb ik vaak over gefantaseerd en zelfs een boek over geschreven), maar hiermee ben ik voorlopig wel tevreden.

Ik ben een groot fan van het fantasygenre, dat zal jullie zo ondertussen bekend zijn. Het enige nadeel is echter dat sommige series zo ongelofelijk lang zijn. The Wheel of Time heeft ondertussen elf delen (de twaalfde komt eraan), de Tales from the Malazan Book of the Fallen worden er tien (met nog zes boeken van een andere schrijver ernaast) en de Shannara-serie van Terry Brooks gaat ook eindeloos door. Ooit wil ik wel eens een einde lezen aan een verhaal. Een ander nadeel van deze boekenseries is dat het wel heel moeilijk wordt er één film van te maken (of zelfs drie). En om van te voren een serie van elf films goed te keuren zal de meeste filmstudio's te ver gaan. Maar er is een oplossing voor gevonden: maak er geen film van maar een miniserie voor de televisie! Dat geeft gelegenheid om alle verhaallijnen te tonen en alle boeken te verfilmen. En als je kijkt naar de pruductiewaarden in series als Firefly en Battlestar Galactica doen die niet veel onder voor hollywood films. Dus gaat er nu een TV-serie gemaakt worden van A Song of Ice and Fire van George R. R. Martin. Ik heb dit boek wel op mijn lijstje staan om ooit eens te lezen, maar het is er nog niet van gekomen. Volgens sommigen is dit de beste fantasy sinds Tolkien. Anderen prijzen de serie om de realistische politieke ontwikkellingen (met ondoden en magie) en de nogal brute overeenkomsten met de donkere middeleeuwen. Nou ben ik niet voor censuur, maar als ik hoor wat voor dingen er allemaal in de boeken beschreven worden, schuif ik ze wat naar achteren op mijn lijstje. Toch zou ik de serie wel willen zien, al was het alleen maar omdat ik dan zou weten waarover ik praat.

Er begint langzaam wat meer bekend te worden over de derde Pirates of the Caribbean-film. Voor iedereen die benieuwd is hoe At Worlds End de tweede film gaat overtreffen staan hier een paar productietekeningen. Als je graag volledig verrast wilt worden moet je niet kijken (en ook niet verder lezen), maar ik werd er wel enthousiast over. Er komen in elk geval dingen in beeld die ik altijd al eens in een film heb willen zien. De vorige film had de kraak (cool! Ik wilde ooit een fantasyverhaal schrijven dat De Koning en de Kraak zou heten. Komt misschien nog wel), deze heeft een gigantische draaikolk! Yes! En een eiland van scheepswrakken! En het einde van de wereld! Het wordt weer een fantastische ervaring in de bioscoop!

Update: de productietekeningen zijn van de site verwijderd. Helaas, ze zagen er spectaculair uit. De tekening van de draaikolk is echter ook te zien op de Dead Man's Chest-DVD: in de documentaire hangt die heel groot in de kamer van de scriptschrijvers. Dus voor wie de tekening toch wil zien...

[There's some nice news again on the topic of movies. Like the trailer for the movie Sunshine. The title reminds me of a sunny romantic comedy, with the heros embracing each other at the Costa del Sol at the end, but that image cannot be further from the truth. It's really a very cool science fiction movie, in which a team of astronauts travels to the sun, that is cooling down. Their goal is to reignite the sun with the help of nuclear weapons. Many SF movies take place in a far future, where the technology need not be realistic, or in our age where aliens invade the earth. This one is about realistically thought out space ships and well researched scenario's. I've heard that the script has been checked by a lot of scientist. Of course it's a disaster movie (like The Core and Deep Impact, which I liked), but the tension will come primarily from the psychological side: to travel to the source of all our light will act on people's nerves, especially when they are close together for such a long time. I am excited about this movie. The sun is a very fascinating star, and I am curious to see it on the big screen.

I wrote before about a new version of Tarzan, that's in production. The author of Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, was fairly productive. He also wrote a series of adventurenovels: John Carter of Mars. In these stories an earthling finds himself on Mars (because he spends the night in a cave. This is more science fantasy than science fiction. But I don't care about that). Mars is peopled by green skinned people, all kinds of monsters and giants. Luckily our hero (John Carter) is equipped with superpowers because of Mars' atmosphere and he takes up the fight against all kinds of injustice (and he rescues the princess. The first part is called The princess of Mars). It all sounds a bit corny, but this was the book that began the cliche. A film version is in the works for some time now. The last news is that Disney has acquired the rights. Maybe they want to make a series of adventure movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, or maybe it will be a Pixar animation production. At any case this seems like the perfect opportunity for alien cityscapes, tentacled monsters, heroism and suchlike. It would be nice if we would have another more realistic movie about Mars also (I've often fantasized about that and even wrote a book about it), but I'm content with this story in the mean time.

I like fantasy, a fact that will not have been lost on you. The only downside is that some series are unbelievably long. The Wheel of Time counts eleven parts already (the twelfth is on its way), the Tales from the Malazan Book of the Fallen will be ten (with another six books by another author) and the Shannara-series by Terry Brooks doesn't seem to end anytime soon. I like to read a conclusion once in a while. Another downside of these series is that it will be very hard to translate them into a movie (or even three). I don't think any studio will greenlight eleven pictures in advance. But there's a solution: make no movie, but a mini-series. That gives the opportunity to show all story lines and adapt all parts of the series. And the production values of series like Firefly and Battlestar Galactica are comparable to those of many hollywood productions. And indeed, there will be made a TV-series based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. This series is on my to-read-list, but I haven't yet. According to some this is the best fantasy since Tolkien. Others praise the series because of the realistic political plots (with undead and magic) and the portrayal of a brutal dark age mentality. Well, i'm not advocating censoring, but when I read some of the things described in these books, I tend to postpone my reading them. Still, I would like to see this series, if only to know what I'm talking about.

Slowly some information is appearing about the third Pirates of the Caribbean picture. Everybody interested in how At Worlds End will top the second movie here is some production artwork. If you want to be completely surprised in the cinema you must not look (and not read on either), but I was enthusiastic about it. There will be shown some things I've always wanted to see on the big screen. The last movie had a kraken (cool! I once wanted to write a fantasystory entitled The King and the Kraken. And maybe I will one day), this one has a giant whirlpool! Yes! And an island comprised of shipwrecks. And the end of the word. It will once again be a fantastical experience!
