Gelukkig nieuw jaar (en dr. Who) (Happy new year, and dr. Who)

Welkom in 2007! En een goed jaar toegewenst, natuurlijk. Zoals je ziet: ook dit jaar is Tol Eressea van de partij om te zoeken naar die films, boeken en berichten die mijn verlangen naar de werkelijkheid van God opwekken. Dat verlangen mag voortdurend groter worden, alleen zo krijgen we een groter beeld van de wereld waarin we leven.
Laat dat nu net een thema zijn uit de kerstaflevering van Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride! (Heeft niks te maken met de film met Richard Gere en Julia Roberts. Sorry.)
Mijn vriend Hans heeft mij besmet met het dr. Who-virus, door samen met mij DVD's van de oude series te bekijken. Hij was namelijk van mening dat deze serie erg nauw bij mijn wat afwijkende interesses aansloot. En hij had natuurlijk gelijk. Wat wil je namelijk nog meer in een film of televisieserie: een door de tijd reizend politiehokje, buitenaardse wezens van allerlei snit, buitensporige plannen voor de verovering van de wereld en de excentrieke Doctor die alles onder controle blijkt te hebben en altijd zorgt voor een gelukkig einde! En niet te vergeten de alles doortrekkende engelse lakonieke humor. Bij deze combinatie worden zelfs de heel goedkope, bordkartonnen decors een inspirerende omgeving, en ruimtewespen van bubbeltjesplastic worden echt angstaanjagend. Een voorbeeld van de mogelijkheden van een levendige verbeelding. En dat is hét kenmerk van de dr. Who serie: een ongebreidelde fantasie. Eindeloos fascinerend.
De nieuwe serie van dr. Who, die begon in 2004 blijkt vast te houden aan wat de oude series zo goed maakte (kruis maar af: tijdreizen, buitenaardse wezens, wereldveroveraars, excentrieke doctor en engelse humor), maar voegt twee dingen toe die de combinatie nog verbeteren: een groter budget voor de special effects (die hun buitensporigheid niet verliezen gelukkig) en meer emotionele diepgang. In de oude verhalen bleef de doctor vaak een koele kikker, hier blijkt er meer te spelen onder de oppervlakte. Dat maakt gelijk dat je als kijker meer met de karakters meeleeft. Er wordt ook goed geacteerd (wat het natuurlijk veel makkelijker maakt in de dokter te geloven). Dat niet alles wetenschappelijk uit te leggen is, neem ik graag voor lief. Dr. Who valt duidelijk in het hokje Science Fantasy in plaats van Science Fiction. Ik bedoel: het gaat over een tijdreizend politiehokje! Niet alles hoeft een wetenschappelijke verklaring te hebben (dat geldt ook voor onze wereld trouwens. Hoewel de maker van de nieuwe serie atheist is, laat hij zo wel zien dat er 'meer is tussen hemel en aarde'. Dat is altijd een waardevol gezichtspunt).
Nu moet ik wel toegeven dat ik de nieuwe dr. Who afleveringen niet (zoals het hoort) op TV heb gezien, maar op de computer. Ook de nieuwste kerstaflevering stond in afleveringen op YouTube.
The Runaway Bride was typisch voor de nieuwe dr. Who, dat wil zeggen: fantasievol vermaak, met veel humor, een dosis spanning en indrukwekkende momenten. De aflevering vormt een brug tussen de tweede serie van vorig jaar en de nieuwe serie die dit jaar verschijnt. In de laatste aflevering moest de Doctor namelijk afscheid nemen van zijn metgezel Rose, en in de nieuwe serie vindt hij iemand anders die hem begeleidt. Nu was de Doctor op zichzelf aangewezen. Maar niet voor lang, want in de TARDIS (het politiehokje, dat van binnen groter is dan van buiten) verschijnt onverwacht een dame in een bruidsjurk, die luidkeels eist naar de kerk te worden teruggebracht. De Doctor is net zo verbaasd als zij. Terwijl zij niets liever wil dan ontsnappen aan de zogenaamde marsbewoner, probeert de doctor het mysterie van haar plotselinge verschijning op te lossen. De situatie wordt gecompliceerd door robot-kerstmannen, ontploffende versiering en een kerstster die niet bepaald vrede op Aarde brengt. Alles hangt samen met elementaire deeltjes uit de donkere fase van het heelal (pfieuw, gelukkig heb ik me een beetje verdiept in de kosmologie!). De robot-kerstmannen waren niet echt origineel (zaten ook in de vorige kerstaflevering), maar er gebeurt genoeg verbazingwekkends, bijvoorbeeld een ongebruikelijke auto-achtervolging. En de doctor en Donna maken een reisje naar het begin van ons zonnestelsel...
Dat laatste was iets dat mijn verlangen natuurlijk aansprak: de gaswolken en rotsblokken waaruit de Aarde ontstond, in prachtige kleuren belicht door de jonge zon! Dat is waar SF-verhalen over moeten gaan. Natuurlijk zijn echte beelden uit de ruimte nog veel indrukwekkender. In de kerstdienst bij mij in de kerk werd een montage getoond van opnames van de Aarde, de zon, weerssystemen, noorderlicht, vulkaanuitbarstingen etcetera. Het deed me iets voelen dat ik maar moeilijk kan omschrijven. Een diep ontzag, bewondering voor iets dat zoveel groter is dan mijzelf. Ontzag voor de majesteit van God, die dat allemaal geschapen heeft en in stand houdt. We leven werkelijk in een bezield universum.
Dat is in mijn optiek ook de strekking van het gesprek tussen de doctor en Donna als ze uitkijken op het stof waaruit de Aarde ontstond. Donna reageert ontstelt: als het heelal zo enorm is, wat stelt de mens dan voor? wat stelt ons bestaan dan voor? Maar de dokter verzekert haar dat mensen wel degelijk belangrijk zijn: "Jullie geven betekenis aan de chaos. Het is allemaal mooi, maar er moet iemand zijn om het waar te nemen." De schrijver mag dan wel atheïst zijn, hier geeft hij volgens mij een argument voor de bezieling van de schepping. Als schoonheid iets echts is, maar ermoet iemand zijn die het waarneemt, dan moet er persoonlijkheid zijn. En het is, zegt hij, persoonlijkheid die orde schept in de chaos. Die persoonlijkheid kan dus niet uit die chaos zelf zijn opgekomen, tenzij door een andere persoonlijkheid. Als de mens er 'moest' zijn om betekenis te geven aan het 'stof', dan moet de mens geschapen zijn door een grotere persoon: de Schepper. Dat is in elk geval hoe ik er tegenaan kijk.
Dan is het ook niet de mens die schoonheid creeërt door het te zien (dus schoonheid is iets subjectiefs, iets dat niet echt bestaat), maar dan is ook de schoonheid van de schepping iets objectiefs, iets dat werkelijk waarde heeft, want het is door een persoon geschapen. En dat betekent dat deze blog waarde heeft, want we proberen hier te bewijzen dat we verlangen naar die schoonheid en we hoeven niet te vrezen dat de vervulling van dat verlangen een illusie is.
Niet voor niets houdt de doctor Donna door de hele aflevering heen voor: 'Je moet het grotere plaatje zien.' Ze is steeds bezig met kleine dingen: of haar trouwerij wel goed verloopt, wie X-factor gewonnen heeft en welke schoenen ze zal kiezen, maar ze moet zien dat er iets belangrijkers is in het leven. (N.B. wil dit een zinvolle opmerking zijn, dan moet er dus objectief iets belangrijkers zijn dan onszelf: God dus. Want anders kunnen we gerust op het kleine gefocust blijven. Al het andere is dan immers stof, kleiner en minder belangrijk dan onszelf. 'Laten wij eten en drinken, want morgen sterven wij'). We leven in een wereld die groter is en mooier en waarin meer aan de hand is dan wij ons kunnen voorstellen. Ons bestaan maakt deel uit van een grotere werkelijkheid.

[Welcome to 2007! And a happy new year to you, of course. As you can see Tol Eressëa is back this year to seek out those movies, books and items that spur my desires for God's reality. I hope that desire will keep op growing, for only in that way we develop a larger view of the world we live in.
And guess what? That's a theme in the christmas special of Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride! (Sorry, no relation with the movie with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.)
My friend Hans has infected me with the Who-virus, by making me watch DVD's of the old series. He thought this series closely mirrored my somewhat 'different' interests. And of course he was right. For what else would you wish for in a movie or tv-series: a time traveling police telephone cell, alies of all types, outrageous plans for world domination and the excentric Doctor who turns out to be in control of everything and always guarantees a happy end. And let's not forget the all pervading laconic britisch humour. With this combination even the rather cheep cardboard decors become inspiring surroundings and space-wasps made of bubble-wrap are truly frightening. It illustrates the poser of a lively imagination. And that is thé distinguishing characterstic of Dr. Who: it's unlimited imagination. It's endlessly fascinating.
The new dr. who-series, that started in 2004, continues what made the old series as good as they were (check: timetravel, aliens, conquerors, excentric doctor and english humour). And it ads two things that improve on the combination: a bigger budget for special effets (that luckily do not lose their outrageousness) and more emotional depth. In the old stories the doctor often remained a cold outsider, here there's more going on beneath the surface. It makes it easier for the audience to connect with the characters. And the acting is quite good (which makes believing in the doctor much more easy). I gladly accept that not everything is scientifically correct. I think Dr. Who clearly belongs to Science Fantasy in stead of Science Fiction. I mean: it's about a time traveling telephone cell! I don't think everything needs a scientific explanation (that goes for our world too. Even though the creator of this new series is an atheist, I think he shows that there is 'more between heaven and earth'. Always a good point of view, I think.)
Now I have to admit I didn't see the new Dr. Who episode on television (as is correct), but on the computer. Even the new christmas special was on YouTube...
The Runaway Bride was a nice example of the new dr. Who, which means: imaginative entertainment, lots of humour, some tense moments and some truly impressive views. This episode is a bridge between the second and third season. In the last episode the doctor had to say goodbye to his old companion Rose, and in the new season he will find someone else to accompany him. In this episode the doctor was on his own. But not for long, because a woman in wedding gown appeared in the TARDIS, and loudly demands to be taken back to the church. The doctor is as astonished as she is. While she want's nothing more than to escape for the 'martian' as she sees him, the doctor tries to solve the riddle of her sudden appearance. The situation is complicated by robot santas, exploding decorations and a star that does not bring peace on earth. All is tied to elementary particles from the dark ages of the universe (luckily I had read some articles on cosmology...). The robot santa's were not very original (as they were in the last christmas special too), but there were more than enough astonishing feats, like an unusual car chase. And the doctor and Donna make a trip to the beginnings of our solar system.
Of course that was something that spoke to my desires: the gas and rocks our earth was created from, all in the beautifull light of the young sun! That's what SF-stories ought to be about. Of course real images from outer space are even more impressive. In the christmas service in our church a video was shown with images of Earth, the sun, weather systems, northern lights, vulcano's et cetera. It made me feel something I find hard to explain. A deep awe of something bigger than myself. Awe of the majesty of God, who created all and sustains it. We do really live in a universe that has a soul.
That, I think, was the meaning of the conversation between the doctor and Donna as they watch the dust the earth was made from. Donna reacts in a disturbed way: if the universe is this big, what does it mean to be human? What is the meaning of our existence? But the doctor reassures her by saying mankind is really important after all: "You make sense out of chaos. It's all beautifull. But you need someone to observe it." The author of Doctor Who may be an atheist, but I think he gives an argument for the life behind the creation. If beauty is real, but there must be someone who observes it, there must be personality. And as the doctor says it's personality that creates sense from chaos. That personality can not have risen from the chaos itself, but by being created by another personality. If mankind 'had to' exist to create meaning from the 'dust', then mankind must have been made by a larger person: the creator. That 's how I see it in any case.
In this way it's not man who creates beauty by seeing it (which would mean beauty is something subjective, something that does not exist), but then the beauty of creation is something objectif, something with real worth, because it is created by a person. And that means this blog is meaningfull, because I try to prove that we desire this beauty, and we need not fear that the fulfillment of that desire is an illusion.
I don't think it's an accident that throughout the episode the doctor says to Donna: "You need to see the larger picture." She is focused on small things: whether her wedding succeeds as planned, who has won X-factor and what shoes to choose, but she has to recognize there are more important things in life. (for this to be a meaningfull remark, there must be something objectively more important than us: God. For else we would be right to remain focussed on the small. All else would be dust, smaller and less important than we ourselves. 'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.'). We do live in a world bigger and more beautifull and with more going on than we could ever imagine. Our existence is part of a larger reality.
