Verlangen in de bioscoop

Voor mij zijn films heel belangrijk. Niets nieuws voor de mensen die mij kennen. Films kunnen op een krachtige manier verlangen opwekken. Ze tonen werelden die mijn verbeelding aanspreken, avonturen waarin ik wil leven en concepten die me aan het denken zetten. De laatste film die me aansprak was Superman Returns: de beelden aan het begin van andere planeten en ruimteverschijnselen waren natuurlijk erg gaaf, maar ook het verhaal met zijn duidelijke paralellen met het verhaal over Jezus en een subtiele humor raakte me.
Natuurlijk volg ik als goede nerd het filmnieuws op internet en dus zijn er al een aantal films waar ik naar uitkijk dit najaar.

* Monster House: deze computeranimatiefilm is nu al uit in de bioscoop. De techniek van computeranimatie is erg geschikt om kijkers naar een andere wereld te verplaatsen. In deze film is het echter de wereld van een gewone straat, met een wel heel eng huis... Dit wordt een film in de stijl van Ghostbusters, Back to the Future en andere films uit de jaren '80: Een beetje eng, maar vooral spannend. Hij is zelfs geproduceerd door Steven Spielberg en Robert Zemeckis...

* Lady in the Water: de nieuwste film van M. Night Shyamalan. Zijn films zijn altijd erg interessant. Deze film gaat over de kracht van verhalen en schijnt niet echt begrepen te zijn door de recensenten. Het is meer een verhaaltje-voor-het-slapengaan dan een thriller. Het uitgangspunt: een waternymf in het zwembad van een hotel... en dan wordt het weird...

* World Trade Center: over 11 september natuurlijk (de vijfde verjaardag van de terreurdaad komt er aan). De film is geen 'documentaire' zoals United 93, maar vertelt over twee reddingswerkers die in het puin beklemd raken. Ik ben altijd gefascineerd door dergelijke overlevingsverhalen (daarom las ik altijd graag Readers' Digest). Bovendien zou er een duidelijke spirituele kant aan het verhaal zitten.

* Children of Men: apocalyptisch SF-verhaal over een toekomst waarin geen kinderen meer geboren worden. De trailer laat een realistische sfeer zien, waarin het uiterste wordt gevraagd van de hoofdpersonen. Het lijkt aangrijpend. Omdat ik ook wel iets heb met dergelijke einde-van-de-beschaving-verhalen staat deze in mijn lijstje.

* The Prestige: nieuwe film van de regisseur van Batman Begins, met de acteurs Christian Bale (Batman), Michael Caine (Butler Alfred) en Hugh Jackman (Wolverine). Een verhaal over twee goochelaars die in een duel verwikkeld raken. De krachten van één van hen lijken bovennatuurlijk, de ander schakelt de hulp in van de historische uitvinder Tesla.

* Flushed Away: van de makers van Wallace and Gromit, maar dit keer computeranimatie in plaats van klei. Is vast makkelijker. Over een verwende rat die in het riool terecht komt en er een hele andere wereld aantreft. Andere wereld? Dat moet wel goed zijn!

* The Guardian: gaat over de reddingsbrigade. Nu heb ik ook lang op de reddingsbrigade gezeten, maar ik heb nooit in metershoge golven hoeven springen. Dat wil niet zeggen dat ik niet geniet van heldhaftige verhalen als deze. En Kevin Costner is best een goede acteur.

* Flags of Our Fathers: Clint Eastwood is een goede regisseur, en deze film gaat over een belangrijke strijd in de oorlog tegen Japan en een iconische foto. Wordt vast indrukwekkend.

* Eragon: De fantasyfilm van dit jaar. Gebaseerd op een populair boek, dat ik nog niet gelezen heb. Sorry. Maar er komen draken in voor. Jazeker! En de regisseur heeft beloofd dat de draken in de film volkomen levensecht zullen zijn. Daar heb ik het bioscoopticket wel voor over.

* The Nativity Story: In tijd voor kerstmis, een realistische weergave van de geboorte van Jezus. Waarschijnlijk ingegeven door het succes van The Passion, maar daarom niet minder boeiend. En Alexander Siddig (Dokter Bashir uit Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) speelt de engel Gabriël...

* Happy Feet: Antartica, dansende pinguïns en antartica. Need I say more?

* Apocalypto: De beschaving van de Maya's (met recht een andere, verdwenen wereld) staat op instorten. Een jonge man die als offer geslacht dreigt te worden, weet te ontsnappen. En de hele film is gesproken in authentiek dialect. Niet verwonderlijk, met Mel Gibson aan het roer.

En voor 2007: Night At The Museum, 300, Sunshine, The Fountain, Spider-Man 3, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds' End en The Bourne Ultimatum.
Het worden goede tijden.

[Movies are very important to me. Nothing new for those who know me. Movies can stimulate desire in a powerful way. They show world's that ignite my imagination, adventures I want to live in and concepts that make me think. The last movie that spoke to me was Superman Returns: ofcourse I liked the images of other planets and stars at the beginning of the movie, but I was also touched by the story with its christ-like imagery and subtle humor.
Like a good geek I check out the movie-news on the internet, so there are a lot of movies I look forward to this fall...

* Monster House: This CG-movie is already in theaters in Holland. The technology used is very good in transporting viewers to another world. In this movie the other world is in fact a common neighborhood with a very scary house... This will be a movie in the vein of Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and other 80's movies: a bit scary, but mostly exciting. It is even produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis.

* Lady in the Water: The last movie by M Night Shyamalan. His movies are alway's intriguing. This one is about the power of storytelling and critics seem to not have understood it. It's more of a bed-time-story than a thriller. The plot: a nymph in the pool of a hotel. Then it gets really weird...

* World Trade Center: About 9/11 ofcourse (following the 5th anniversary of the act of terror). This is no documentary-styled movie like United 93, but tells the story of two policemen trapped beneath the rubble. I've always been fascinated by stories about survival (that's why I liked to read Readers' Digest). And I've read there will be a clear spiritual angle to this story.

* Children of Men: Apocalyptic SF-story about a future without children. The trailer shows a realistic atmosphere, in which the hero's have to rise beyond their capabilities. It promises a harrowing story. Because I have a soft spot for these kind of end-of-civilisation-stories, this one is in my shortlist too.

* The Prestige: the new movie of the director of Batman Begins, with actors Christian Bale (Batman), Michael Caine (Butler Alfred) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine). About two stagemagicians getting engaged in a duel. One of them seems to possess supernatural power. The other asks for help from historical inventor Tesla.

* Flushed Away: by the creators of Wallace and Gromit, but this time made by computer instead of clay. Should be easier. About a spoiled rat who is 'flushed away' and discovers a whole new world. New world? Should be good!

* The Guardian: about save and rescue. Though I've been part of a save- and rescue-organisation, I never had to jump in high waves like these guys. But I still enjoy heroic tales like this. And Kevin Costner can act.

* Flags of Our Fathers: Clint Eastwood is an acclaimed director, and this movie is about an important step in the war in the pacific and an iconic photograph. Will likely be impressive.

* Eragon: this years' fantasymovie. Based on a popular book which I haven't read. So sue me... But there are dragons in it, yes sir! And the director has promised to created really lifelike ones for the movie. That must be worth the price of the ticket.

* The Nativity Story: just in time for christmas comes a realistic retelling of Jesus' birth. Obviously inspired by the succes of Teh Passion, but not less interesting because of that. And Alexander Siddig (Doctor Bashir from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) will be Gabriël...

* Happy Feet: Antartica, dancing penguïns and Antartica. Need I say more?

* Apocalypto: The civilisation of the Maya's (really another world that is no more) faces its end. A young man who is destined to be sacrificed escapes. The whole movie is in ancient Mayan. Not surprising as it is directed by Mel Gibson...

And in 2007: Night At The Museum, 300, Sunshine, The Fountain, Spider-Man 3, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds' End en The Bourne Ultimatum.
We have good times ahead of us...
