The nativity story

Oom Scrooge van A christmas carol kan aan de kant worden geschoven. Santa Claus één, twee en drie kunnen van de buis en Jim Carrey's The Grinch hoeft niet meer gedraaid te worden: er komt een nieuwe kerstfilm (klik op 'movies' en dan op 'theatrical trailer'). The Nativity Story vertelt het verhaal van Maria en Jozef en de gebeurtenissen die leiden tot de geboorte van Jezus. Volgens mij de enige geboorte die meer dan tweeduizend jaar na dato nog over de hele wereld gevierd wordt. En een verhaal dat bijna iedereen kent, al was het maar uit de kinderbijbel.
Kan een film er recht aan doen? Ik weet het niet, maar de trailer maakt in elk geval een authentieke indruk. De acteurs zien er oosters uit en de verachting van de Joden voor een vrouw die schijnbaar overspel heeft gespeeld is duidelijk. Wordt het een film die op zondagsschoolvieringen getoond kan worden? Volgens mij niet. De bijbel is geen kinderboek. In de strijd tussen goed en kwaad gebeuren dingen die het daglicht niet kunnen verdragen. De kindermoord is daar één van.
Heeft dit iets te maken met verlangen? Absoluut! Jezus was ten eerste de messias waarnaar het Joodse volk al eeuwen verlangde. En hij gaf een nieuw verlangen in de harten van mensen, van Oosterse wijsgeren tot ruwe herders, van de oude Simeon en Anna in de tempel tot het ongeboren kind van Elizabeth. Wie Jezus ontmoette was nooit meer dezelfde. Datzelfde zal niet gelden voor de film, dat is maar plastic. Maar misschien wekken de beelden wel verlangen op naar de echte Jezus. Wie weet.

Uncle Scrooge out of A christmas carol can be put aside. Santa Claus 1,2 and 3 can be shelved and Jim Carrey's The Grinch is no longer the top christmas entertainment. There's a new christmas movie (klick 'movies' followed by 'theatrical trailer'). The Nativity Story tells the story of Mary and Joseph and the way Jesus came to be. I think his birth is the only one still celebrated around the world after 2000 year. And it's a story everybody knows, if only from their days at sunday school.
Can a movie be able to convey it's truth? I don't know, but the trailer gives an authentic feel. The actors look eastern and the way the Jews despise a woman seemingly caught in adultery is clear to see. Will this be a film safe to show at a childrens meeting? I think not. The bible is not a book for children. In the battle between good and evil horrible things happen. The murder of the children is one of those things.
Does this have anything to do with desire? Absolutely! Firstly Jesus was the messiah the Jewish people desired for centuries. And he put a new desire in people's hearts: of the Eastern magi, the course shepherds, the old Simeon and Anna in the temple and Elizabeths unborn child. All who met Jesus were changed irrevocably. The same will not be true for the movie. It's only celluloid. But maybe these images will ignite a desire to meet the real deal. Who knows...]
